Rantac 150mg Tablet (Ranitidine Hydrochloride IP) | H2 Receptor Blocker | Gastric & Ulcer Support for Dogs & Cats
PRESCRIPTION REQUIRED — SCHEDULE H DRUG
This is a Schedule H prescription medicine. It will only be dispensed upon submission of a valid prescription from a registered veterinary practitioner. Use strictly as directed by your veterinarian.
Rantac 150mg Tablet contains Ranitidine Hydrochloride IP equivalent to Ranitidine 150 mg, an H2 receptor blocker used off-label in veterinary practice for the management of gastric acid-related conditions in dogs and cats. It works by competitively blocking H2 receptors on parietal cells in the stomach lining, reducing acid production and raising gastric pH to support healing of the gastrointestinal tract.
Ranitidine also has a mild prokinetic effect, stimulating stomach emptying and bowel motility — making it useful in animals with decreased gastrointestinal motility alongside acid-related conditions.
Veterinary Indications
- Gastric and duodenal ulcers in dogs and cats
- Oesophageal ulcers and acid reflux (GERD)
- Gastritis (stomach inflammation) including that caused by kidney disease
- Decreased gastrointestinal motility and protracted vomiting
- Helicobacter infection (as part of combination therapy)
- Inflammatory bowel disease support
- Canine parvovirus — supportive gastric protection
- NSAID-induced gastric irritation or ulceration
- Mast cell tumours — management of histamine-induced gastric hypersecretion
- Protection during ingestion of gastric-irritating toxins
Veterinary Dosing Guide
Use only as directed by your veterinarian. The following are standard reference doses — actual dose will be determined by your vet based on your pet's condition, weight, and kidney/liver function.
- Dogs: 0.5 to 2 mg/kg (0.25 to 1 mg/lb) orally or by injection, every 8 to 12 hours
- Cats: 3.5 mg/kg (1.5 to 1.75 mg/lb) orally, every 12 hours
- May be given with or without food
- Ranitidine works best when given before the first meal of the day
- Do not stop medication before completing the prescribed course
- Dose may be reduced in animals with kidney or liver disease
Key Features
- H2 Receptor Blocker: Reduces gastric acid secretion for up to 8 hours — longer action than cimetidine.
- Prokinetic Effect: Stimulates gastrointestinal motility — useful in vomiting and GI stasis cases.
- Ulcer Treatment & Prevention: Supports healing of gastric, duodenal, and oesophageal ulcers.
- Off-Label Veterinary Use: Legally prescribed by veterinarians for dogs, cats, and horses.
- Minimal Drug Interactions: Only minimally (10%) inhibits hepatic drug metabolism — safer than cimetidine in multi-drug protocols.
Precautions & Contraindications
- Use with caution in animals with decreased kidney or liver function — dose reduction may be required.
- Use with caution in lactating animals — ranitidine is concentrated in maternal milk.
- Inform your veterinarian of all medications your pet is receiving before starting ranitidine.
- Known drug interactions: antacids (allow 2-hour gap), sucralfate (allow 2-hour gap), ketoconazole (allow 2-hour gap), theophylline, propranolol.
- Ranitidine may decrease the metabolism of acetaminophen — avoid concurrent use.
- Do not administer without veterinary prescription and guidance.
- This is a short-acting medication — effects generally last within 24 hours; longer in pets with liver or kidney disease.
Side Effects
- Generally very safe and well-tolerated in dogs and cats.
- Most common: mild diarrhoea or gastrointestinal upset.
- If any unusual reactions are observed, stop use and contact your veterinarian immediately.
