Betadine Povidone-Iodine Ointment USP 5% W/W is a water-soluble topical microbicidal ointment used in dogs and cats to help cleanse and protect minor wounds, cuts, and skin infections. It may help reduce microbial load on the skin surface, including bacteria, fungi, yeasts, spores, protozoa, and viruses, even in the presence of organic matter such as blood or serum. Always follow your veterinarian's specific instructions before applying any topical antiseptic to your pet.

Prescription status: Veterinarian consultation recommended before use on pets.

Primary Use:

  • Topical antiseptic for minor wound care and skin infection management in dogs and cats

  • Pre- and post-operative skin preparation support

  • May help manage superficial skin injuries, abrasions, and minor lacerations

Dosage and Application:

Use only as directed by your veterinarian. General topical guidelines:

  • Apply a thin layer directly to the affected area

  • Frequency: typically 1–2 times daily or as directed by your vet

  • Duration: use until the wound shows signs of healing or as advised

  • For external use only — do not apply near eyes, ears, or mucous membranes

  • Do not bandage tightly over freshly applied ointment unless instructed

  • Puncture the nozzle seal with the piercing point of the cap before first use

Contraindications:

Do not use this product if:

  • Your pet has a known sensitivity or allergy to iodine or povidone-iodine

  • The wound involves deep tissue, puncture wounds, or serious lacerations — seek veterinary care immediately

  • Your pet is being treated with other topical antiseptics or medications on the same area without veterinary approval

  • The skin area is severely irritated, burned, or shows signs of deep infection

  • Not for use in or near the eyes, ears, nose, or mouth

Common Side Effects:

Side effects from topical use are generally uncommon but may include:

  • Mild skin irritation or redness at the application site

  • Temporary skin staining (brown/yellow discolouration) from iodine

  • Skin dryness with prolonged use

  • Excessive licking of the area (use an Elizabethan collar to prevent ingestion)

If your pet shows signs of swelling, hives, difficulty breathing, or severe skin reaction, discontinue use and contact your veterinarian immediately.

Storage Instructions:

  • Store protected from light at a temperature not exceeding 30°C

  • Do not freeze

  • Keep out of reach of children and pets

  • Keep the tube tightly closed when not in use
