What Size Of Dog Is Right For You

Choosing a dog isn’t always so easy and with so many dog breeds to choose from, trying to find the right fit for your home and family can be overwhelming. Before choosing a dog, there are various factors that you have to take into consideration. Let’s see what those factors could be.

How to decide what size of dog is right for you?

We often get confused on which dog, particularly what size of dog, to get since they are all so lovable. Do we get a small, medium or large doggy? This question remains with every person planning to adopt a pet. We are here to help you figure that out with a rundown of every contributing factors that goes into deciding which size of dog you should get:-

Space:
One of the most important situations to consider while adopting a dog is the amount of space you have in your home for a dog. If you have a small house, a large dog won’t be able to walk around without bumping into something or knocking over furniture.Their large physique needs spacious accommodation so that they can walk and run around without bulldozing something. Large sized dogs would thrive more if given a more spacious home and if you have or planning to have more than one large sized pet, a bigger home is definitely a requirement. On the other hand, small to medium sized breeds such as a Pug, Poodle, Beagle, Shih Tzu or puppies who eventually grow to a large size such as German Shepherd, Golden Retriever, Labrador, etc can be considered for small, moderate spaced homes. We would recommend the former since the latter, once grown, may need more space.
Schedule:
When you want to adopt a dog, you need to make sure you will have enough time to at least take care of your dog’s basic needs. It includes giving them timely meals, walking them outdoors at least once a day, grooming, vet care, etc. There are dogs who can stay at home even when you are out so that you can get some work done but still come home to your pet. These dogs are a Basset Hound, Labradoodle, Bull Terrier, Golden Retriever, English Bulldog, etc. These are dogs that can occupy themselves with toys and naps till the time you come home so you can manage your schedule but still get to have a loving dog.
Cost of dog ownership:
When adopting a dog, finance plays a big role in making that decision. Owning a dog increases the flow of supply such as food, toys, grooming products, etc. Objectively speaking, if you have a tighter budget it would be suggested that you get a smaller sized dog since supplies for larger dogs are more expensive. Additionally, vet costs can be higher for larger dogs since their body would require a higher dosage of medications. We wouldn’t want to discourage you from wanting a larger sized dog if you are able to take care of them properly but it’s not just about wanting a dog but having the means to care for them. You should make a decision that is for the good of you as well as your dog.
Dog's personality:
More often than not, smaller dogs are capable of being active much longer than their larger counterparts. If you are looking for a play buddy who is as energetic as you, small to medium sized dogs such as Chihuahua, Beagle, Border Collie, Golden Retriever puppy, etc are some great dogs to have a play time with. However, if you want a dog who can hike with you on trails and mountains, larger breeds would be ideal. They include the German Shepherd, Dalmatians, Siberian Husky, Labrador, Greyhound, etc. If you are looking for calmer, less energetic dogs, there’s always a Pug, Bulldog, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Basset Hound etc. It’s not to say that there’s no catch to some of these calmer dogs. They still need to be well trained, well socialized and have their physical and emotional needs met so that they can be the perfect versions of themselves and not only them, all pet dogs need to be trained so that they are in sync with their owner.
Traveling accommodation:
Do you go on road trips or travel by a four-wheeler a lot? If you do and you are thinking of adding your future dog as a travel buddy then you need to take a few things into consideration such as whether you have family or you travel alone. If you are alone, then the size of the dog really won’t matter, especially if you have a four-wheeler. Then you can get a small, medium or a large dog.If you plan to get a big dog and If you travel with family, you will need a bigger car.
Adopting is a big decision even for pet parents therefore you need to ensure that you are making this decision by taking various factors into account, including size of the dog. Whatever size you decide, remember that regardless of size, every dog has the potential to be a loving and loyal companion. Choosing the right one is only about finding a match that is compatible with your life and home. Each size category offers unique advantages and challenges, so understanding your own circumstances and preferences is key to finding your perfect furry buddy.
